Crispy Wonton Mozzarella Sticks

By Heather Wirtz January 19, 2016
My boys love mozzarella sticks, so we decided to try to make a homemade version. This recipe only uses a few ingredients, is fairly simple to make and older kiddos can certainly help "wrap the cheese". Depending on the size wonton wrappers you find, you may need to cut the sting cheese to size... we found small squares which worked well cutting the cheese in thirds.

Ingredients:
String cheese

Wonton wrappers
Oil for deep-frying
Small bowl of water
Marinara or other sauce for dipping

Directions:
  1. Heat oil to approximately 375.
  2. Cut each string cheese into thirds, this could vary depending on size of wonton wrappers.
  3. Brush the edges of a wonton wrapper with water, I used my fingers for this.
  4. Place cheese in the center, roll, fold edges up, and roll again - see picture. Be sure cheese is completely encased.
  5. Set aside for frying and repeat for remaining wonton wrappers and cheese.
  6. A few at a time, fry for 1-2 minutes or until golden brown, flipping half-way through. Watch closely - frying a few seconds too long will cause the cheese to escape!
  7. Remove from oil and drain on a paper towel.
  8. Serve hot with dipping sauce of your choice.

Note:
You can cook these in small batches and reheat all at once on a sheet pan in the oven at 400 degrees. Again, be sure not to cook too long or the cheese will escape!
