Yup, Tonight I'm Going to be That Mom

Thanks, HelloFresh

By Joyce Shulman November 15, 2016
In my fantasy life -- you know, the one where my house is spotless, my kids are always well-behaved and I don't leave the house without mascara -- a homemade dinner, complete with a healthy side or two, appears on my dinner table every evening.

In the reality that is my life, I am often too busy to plan, shop and prepare so dinner is often a hodge podge of whatever I can dig out of my freezer.

So when the team from HelloFresh recently offered me the chance to try a few of their meals, I couldn't resist. A couple of days later, a large box appeared on our doorstep. In it were the fixings for three complete dinners for our family of four, which took into account all of our dining preferences. Every ingredient, including spices and seasonings, plus detailed instructions, was included.

We made it a family affair and night one found the four of us in the kitchen making Thai meatballs over Asian noodles. The next night it was Tuscan chicken and we rounded out our HelloFresh experience with taco night. Unpacking the boxes, exploring the ingredients and working together to prepare dinner was fun.

My favorite thing about HelloFresh is the way it encouraged us to try new recipes and new flavors. We make sweet potato fries often, but never thought to add cumin. And meatballs are a staple around here, but adding Thai spices made it an entirely different meal. I believe it is important to introduce your kids to different flavors and different foods. But, like many of us I suspect, I fall deeply into a dinner rut. HelloFresh opened our eyes to some new ideas and made it easy.

At about $40 for a dinner for four, the cost is above what I normally spend for dinner at home, though less than dinner out. But I look at HelloFresh as more of an experience and the chance, at least for a night or two a week, to live out my fantasy life -- you know, the one where I'm that mom who puts a fresh, creative dinner on the table.
