The Do It Myself Kids' Cookbook
Review, Recipes and GIVEAWAY!

Do you have mini chef in your life? The Do It Myself Kids' Cookbook by Laurie Goldrich Wolf is the perfect cookbook for any child with an interest in cooking and helping out in the kitchen!
Each of the 45 recipes can be made by a child without any adult assistance (a handful of recipes require a little prep work for an adult to do ahead of time) and do not require any tool sharper than a butter knife. All three of my boys (ages 3, 5, & 7) enjoyed looking through the colorful pages and each selected several recipes he wanted to create. All ingredients, tools and instructions are broken down into simple steps and accompanied by photos.

Some of our favorite recipes included Turkey, Cheese, and Roasted Red Pepper Roll-ups, Shrimp Tacos with Avocado and Corn, Dipped Fruit Slices, Sesame Noodle Salad, Indoor S'mores, Strawberry Tall Cake, Tiny Trifle and Kid Sangria.
Here are two of our favorite recipes from the book:
Turkey, Cheese, and Roasted Red Pepper Roll-ups
Tools:
- Cutting board
- Plastic knife
- Paper towels
- Toothpicks
Ingredients:
- 1 6-inch flour tortilla
- 2 slices roast turkey
- 2 slices cheddar cheese
- 1 whole roasted pepper from a jar
Steps:
- On a cutting board, place 2 slices of turkey on a tortilla, covering up as much tortilla as possible.
- Place 2 slices of cheddar cheese on the turkey. Push to the side.
- Place the roasted pepper on a paper towel and drain off any oil or liquid. On the cutting board, use a plastic knife to thinly slice the roasted pepper. Lay the pepper slices on top of the cheddar cheese.
- Roll up the tortilla, gently pressing it together as you roll so it will stick closed.
- Using the plastic knife, slice the roll into 1-inch pieces. Push a toothpick into each roll to keep closed.
Tiny Trifle
Tools:
- Ziploc bag
- 4 custard cups
- Measuring spoons
- Medium bowl
- Measuring cup
- Hand mixer
Ingredients:
- 16 vanilla wafers
- 32 raspberries
- 8 tablespoons chocolate syrup
- 1 small package instant vanilla pudding mix
- 2 cups 2% milk
Steps:
- Put 16 vanilla wafers into the Ziploc bag and close it securely. Press down on the cookies in the bag to crush them into chunks. DO NOT turn them into crumbs - there should be some big pieces.
- Place 4 custard cups securely on your work surface. Put 2 tablespoons of the cookie crumbles in the bottom of each cup.
- Place 4 raspberries on each pile of crumbles. Drizzle 1 tablespoon of chocolate syrup on each cup of berries.
- Make the instant pudding by mixing the milk with the pudding powder and using the mixer to beat until the pudding is completely smith. Plop equal amounts of pudding into each of the 4 custard cups.
- Put the cups in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes. Use a timer or sing 3 or 4 different songs while you wait. Take the cups out of the fridge.
- Add 4 raspberries to each cup. Sprinkle each cup with some cookie pieces and top each cup with 1 tablespoon of chocolate syrup.

Right now the kids are in the mac 'n cheese stage, so that is their favorite meal to make. They test the noodles to see if they are done and get to help stir in the cheese.
