Tips for Cooking with the Season's Best Produce

June 24, 2014
Summer is officially here - time for barbecues, picnics on the beach, and lots of trips to the ice cream truck. Don’t get us wrong, we love a good burger or a nostalgic push-pop as much as anyone, but just because the days are getting a little longer and lazier, doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice healthy, fresh food for processed or packaged quick fixes (sorry, push-pops). So the team of chefs at the recipe-kit delivery service HelloFresh is here to talk about the benefits of cooking and eating with the seasons and taking advantage of the best produce the summer has to offer.

Keep Your Wallet Fat
… and not your waistline! There’s a misconceived notion that eating fresh, high-quality food is expensive, but eating in season is quite the opposite. By purchasing foods that are at their peak harvest, they are going to be cheaper than if you were to buy them when they’re not in season and imported from somewhere else across the globe. Good ol’ supply and demand is on your side here - if your local market has a surplus of strawberries in the summer, they’re inevitably going to be less expensive than when they’re harder to find in the winter.

Taste The Rainbow
Only this rainbow is made of flavorful and vibrant fruits and vegetables. Produce is going to taste best when enjoyed in season, not after being transported on an airplane. Ever had the misfortune of biting into a mealy peach in January? Not pleasant. Enjoy those peaches now and savor a sweet clementine when it’s cold out.

Naturally Nutrient-Dense
Much like taste, produce is better at preserving its natural nutrients when in season than when not.

Beat Boredom
If your kitchen follows what’s naturally in season, you’ll get to try different fruits and vegetables all year round. Eating seasonally is a great way to discover new produce and break out of our broccoli-and-green-beans-every-night rut (though we love broccoli and green beans, too!).

We’ve told you why we’re big fans of cooking and eating seasonally, but in case we haven’t convinced you yet, here are three of our favorite summer gems and delicious recipes to try them out at home.

Corn
Ok, obviously. It wouldn’t be summer without corn. But we encourage you to think off the cob this year! Try grilling it, serving it Mexican style with a mixture of mayonnaise and cotija cheese, or use it to top off tacos, like in our Sweet Potato & Black Bean Tacos.

Summer Squash
With summer in its name, you can’t go wrong here. This colorful squash cooks up quickly and tastes great grilled on its own, or dressed up in a simple pasta dish. Try our Roasted Summer Squash and Tomato Rotini for a quick weeknight dinner.

Peaches
No mealy peaches here! These beauties are great as a healthy treat, but we love serving them savory-style, such as in our Grilled Steak and Peach Salad. The contrast of sweet and savory is not to be missed!

We know venturing to the farmer’s market and studying up on seasonal produce can be a little overwhelming at first, so to help you out, we’re offering all Macaroni Kid readers 50% off your first HelloFresh delivery with the code MACARONI50. We always aim to send you the freshest and highest quality ingredients we can find, so you can rest easy that we’ve got your best interests (and taste buds) at heart.
