July Observances Families May Want to Talk About

July also includes observances that can help families start important conversations, build empathy, and learn together.

  • Nelson Mandela Day (July 18): “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” Nelson Mandela Day is a worldwide call to honor his legacy through volunteering and community service. It’s a great day to do something kind together as a family.
  • National Disability Independence Day (July 26): This year marks the 36th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act — landmark legislation that helps make sure people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. Learn more about the ADA, and read one mom’s story of Embracing Disability.
