Easy DIY Halloween Costumes Using Clothes You Already Have

1. Chef

What you need: Apron, white shirt, chef's hat, and a spatula or whisk.

Tie on an apron, grab a clean kitchen utensil, and add a chef's hat. You can make one with white paper or skip it entirely.

Make it even easier: An apron and a whisk are all it takes.

2. Tourist

What you need: Hawaiian shirt or colorful button-down, shorts, sunglasses, and a hat.

Add a camera, binoculars, or a map and your little traveler is ready to see the sights. Bonus points for socks with sandals.

Make it even easier: A bright shirt, sunglasses, and a camera around the neck are plenty.

3. Scarecrow

What you need: Flannel shirt, jeans or overalls, a hat, and face paint.

Add rosy cheeks, a triangle nose and a few stitched-looking lines drawn around the mouth. Tuck a little raffia or strips of yellow construction paper into the pockets for a straw effect.

Make it even easier: A flannel shirt, hat, and painted-on stitches make this costume recognizable.

5. Artist

What you need: Old oversized white shirt, washable markers, and a paintbrush.

Turn an old shirt into an artist’s smock with colorful marker scribbles and “paint” splatters (no drying time needed!). Add a beret if you have one, and let your child carry a clean paintbrush and a homemade cardboard palette.

Make it even easier: An old paint-stained shirt and a paintbrush work perfectly.

6. Black Cat

What you need: Black clothes, a headband, and black eyeliner or face paint.

Dress your child in all black, draw on a little nose and some whiskers, and add cat ears. Make the ears from black construction paper attached to a headband, or use a pair you already own.

Make it even easier: Skip the ears and let the whiskers do the work.

7. Detective

What you need: Trench coat or jacket, hat, notebook, and magnifying glass.

Your little mystery solver is on the case! Add a magnifying glass or notebook filled with "clues" for extra fun.

Make it even easier: A jacket, notebook, and serious detective expression will do.

8. '80s Workout Star

What you need: Bright T-shirt, leggings or shorts, fabric headband, and athletic shoes.

Pull together the brightest workout clothes you can find. Add a headband, high socks, and a side ponytail for that classic retro fitness look.

Make it even easier: Neon clothes and a headband do the trick.

9. Bat

What you need: Black clothes, a headband, and black fabric or felt.

Dress your child in black and cut bat wings from lightweight black fabric or felt. Safety-pin the top edge of each wing along the back of the shirt sleeves, from wrist to armpit, so they spread out when your child lifts their arms. Add pointy paper ears to a headband.

Make it even easier: Black clothes and a pair of homemade bat ears work for a simple, comfortable costume.

10. Superhero

What you need: Bright shirt, leggings or pants, and a piece of fabric for a cape.

Every superhero needs a signature look! Create a simple emblem from paper or felt and attach it to a plain shirt. Add a cape made from lightweight fabric, attached so it can easily come off.

Make it even easier: A favorite superhero T-shirt and a homemade paper emblem are enough to save Halloween.

11. Witch or Wizard

What you need: Dark clothes, a hat, and a wand.

Black or dark-colored clothes make the perfect base. Add a witch hat or make a wizard hat from construction paper. A decorated cardboard tube wand finishes the costume.

Make it even easier: Dark clothes, a hat and a little imagination work wonders.

12. Pirate

What you need: Striped shirt, dark pants, bandana, and belt.

Tie a bandana around your child's head, add a wide belt and you're nearly there. A cardboard treasure map makes a fun prop.

Make it even easier: Striped shirt, bandana, and a hearty "Arrr!" are all you need.

13. Ghost

What you need: White sheet or oversized white clothing, plus black felt or construction paper.

For a simple ghost, dress your child in white and attach black felt or paper eyes to the front of an oversized white shirt. It's the familiar ghost look without needing to cover your child's face.

Make it even easier: Use a white hoodie and add two big black eyes to the front.

15. Robot

What you need: Cardboard box, aluminum foil, colored paper, and tape.

Turn a cardboard box into a robot body with foil, paper buttons, and colorful dials. Make sure there are comfortable openings for arms and plenty of room to move.

Tips for Making a Last-Minute Halloween Costume Work

The best homemade Halloween costume is one your child will actually want to wear. A few things to remember:

  • Start with the closet. Look for solid-color shirts, leggings, sports uniforms, flannels, and old dress-up accessories before making anything.
  • Keep a no-sew kit handy. Safety pins, duct tape, fabric tape, and a hot glue gun can attach just about anything to a shirt (grown-ups only on the hot glue!).
  • Comfort comes first. Make sure your child can walk, sit, and use the bathroom easily.
  • Keep faces visible. Skip anything that blocks your child's vision, especially for nighttime trick-or-treating.
  • Make them easy to see. Darker costumes like the black cat, bat, witch, and detective are hard to see at night. Add strips of reflective tape, glow stick bracelets or a small flashlight.
  • Think about the weather. Choose costumes that can fit over warm layers if Halloween night is chilly.
  • Have a toddler? The black cat, ghost hoodie, athlete, and chef are the easiest for little ones. They’re comfy, with no props to keep track of.
  • Don't worry about perfection. The costume doesn't have to be Pinterest-worthy. Sometimes the simplest ideas are the most fun.

And remember, if your child changes their mind about their costume at 4 p.m. on Halloween, something in the closet can probably save the day.
